Tularosa was first settled in 1860 by farmers from
the Mesilla Valley. In 1863, the original village site of
49 blocks was mapped. In 1979 the "49 blks" was declared a historic district, and placed on the
National Register of Historic Places.

In 1863, during the Indian Wars, several sheepherders were killed on Tularosa Peak, about six miles southwest of Tularosa and overlooking the Tularosa Valley. This Peak was called Dead Man's Hill for a time. In 1868, a Sergeant Glass defeated some Apaches on Round Mountain, though now Tularosa Peak is the accepted name.

Irrigation water from the Rio Tularosa prompted the original settlers to choose Tularosa. An acequia or ditch system was developed which still provides irrigation water for the "49 blocks" as well as area farms. This accounts for the "oasis" appearance of the village.
